Athenascope
alternatives.

Athenascope turned Twitch VODs into game highlights and montages for free. It stopped in April 2022. Here is what happened, and what does that job today.

Twitch · YouTube · Kick · TikTok + uploads & URLs on Creator Plus

Short answer: Athenascope is gone. At the end of March 2022 its homepage said highlight creation was no longer available and asked users to download their content before Tuesday, April 5, and athenascope.com now redirects to Roblox, which its team joined. The closest tools today are Eklipse and Sizzle, which scan your VOD after the stream for game moments, Medal and Outplayed, which record on your PC, and ReelShift, which clips your live stream while you are still live. Facts checked on each company's own site on 15 October 2026.

Athenascope details from its own help center and homepage as archived by the Wayback Machine in January and March 2022. Eklipse, Sizzle and ReelShift checked on their own sites on 15 October 2026. Competitor plans change; verify on their sites before deciding.

What happened to Athenascope

At the end of March 2022, Athenascope replaced its homepage with a short goodbye. The archived copy from 31 March 2022 shows it: highlight creation was no longer available, users were thanked for being part of the community, and they were asked to download their content before Tuesday, April 5. The notice does not name a replacement tool.

Today athenascope.com redirects to Roblox's corporate site. Athenascope's LinkedIn page is now titled "Athenascope (joined Roblox)" and says the team behind it joined Roblox to help speed up Roblox's social strategy. A Roblox newsroom post from October 2023 says Athenascope's founder joined Roblox in 2022. We found no published deal terms from either side.

If you did not save your clips before that April deadline, there is no account left to get them from.

What Athenascope actually did

Athenascope's own help center, as archived in January 2022, describes a cloud AI it called Athena that watched gameplay and clipped the best moments. In practice:

  • Connect and forget. You linked Twitch or Facebook Gaming, or imported YouTube broadcasts, and could switch on automatic highlights for every new public VOD. A Windows app covered gameplay you did not broadcast.
  • Game by game detection. It read in-game events like kills, wins and round ends in a list of supported games, from Fortnite and Apex Legends to Valorant and Call of Duty.
  • Montages, not just clips. A victory earned a Top Round Montage, 2 to 30 kills an Elimination Montage, and meeting the weekly requirements earned a Showcase, a music-synced montage of your best plays.
  • Slow but hands-off. A 2 hour VOD took about 2 hours to analyze, then you got an email or a Discord message.
  • Free, with a watermark. It called itself a free program and watermarked clips by default, with a setting to switch it off.

Nobody copies that whole package today, so the shortlist above splits the job.

Eklipse as an Athenascope alternative: what changed

Eklipse is where many former Athenascope users ended up, and Eklipse's own Athenascope page calls it the closest overall replacement. For the workflow, that is fair: you connect Twitch, YouTube or Kick, its AI goes through each finished stream for game moments, and you get vertical clips back with captions and edits.

The big change is price. Athenascope was free. Eklipse's help center now says there is no free clipping tier: a free account gets an AI scan of one recent stream so you can preview what it finds, and exporting clips needs Premium at $24.99 a month or $179.99 a year. Eklipse's blog dates the move to a fully paid product to June 2026.

So older reviews that mention a free Eklipse plan are out of date. More on the tool in Eklipse alternatives and ReelShift vs Eklipse.

Sizzle, Medal and Outplayed: the other routes

Sizzle is the closest in spirit. Like Athenascope, it links Twitch or YouTube, reads game events such as kills, knockdowns, headshots and victories, and builds compilations, for $4.99 a month. See Sizzle alternatives for how it stacks up.

Medal and Outplayed cover the Windows app half of what Athenascope did. Both record on your PC: Medal on a hotkey or a game event, Outplayed automatically in over 5,000 games through Overwolf. Both are free. They see your PC, not your broadcast, so anything that is not a game event depends on you pressing a key. The difference is covered in game recorders vs stream clippers.

Where ReelShift fits

ReelShift does Athenascope's job from the other end. Instead of waiting for the VOD, it watches your live stream on Twitch, Kick, YouTube or TikTok LIVE and cuts moments as they happen. On game streams it reads kills and wins off the screen, much like Athenascope did. It also follows what you say, so a story, a joke, a hot take or a big reaction gets clipped even when nothing happened in the game.

Each clip comes back reframed to 9:16 with word-synced captions burned in, ready to post, usually while you are still live. Say "clip that" on any plan to grab the last 60 seconds yourself.

What it does not do: it is built for live streams, so past VODs and file uploads are only on Creator Plus, and it has a light clip editor, not a full video editor. There is no free plan, only a 7 day free trial. If weekly montages were what you loved about Athenascope, look at Sizzle's compilations or Eklipse first. More on the Twitch clipper page.
