Short answer: to start IRL streaming you need a phone, a free streaming app, a clip-on mic and a power bank: $158.99 on top of your phone, or $318.98 with a gimbal. When dead zones start ending your stream, add a second data line and bond the connections with a free app (Moblin, IRL Pro) through a relay. The pro step, a LiveU Solo PRO with a camera, comes to $3,304.98; TVU sells the TVU One by quote. Data: about 2.7 GB an hour at 6 Mbps.

Tier 1: the phone only IRL setup (how to IRL stream from your phone)

Every big platform lets you go live from its own app: Twitch, KICK Go Live, TikTok and YouTube (YouTube needs at least 50 subscribers to stream from a phone). Twitch's mobile guide also recommends third party apps, each free or with a free version: Streamlabs Mobile, PRISM Live Studio, IRL Pro (Android) and Moblin (iPhone). Which fits you: best IRL streaming apps.

  • Phone and app: the phone you have, a free app. $0.
  • Clip-on mic: RØDE Wireless Micro, $99 on rode.com: two clip-on transmitters and a receiver for USB-C or Lightning phones, up to 21 hours with its case.
  • Power bank: Anker Power Bank (20K, 87W), $59.99 on sale on anker.com (list $69.99). Kick's help suggests one for any IRL stream over 30 minutes.
  • Gimbal (optional): Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, $159.99. DJI lists the Osmo Mobile 7 at $75, but its US store showed it out of stock. No gimbal? KICK Go Live has a stabilisation switch on iPhone, and Moblin has video stabilization.

Total, arithmetic: $99 + $59.99 = $158.99, or $318.98 with the gimbal. Its limit is one connection: when your carrier's signal drops, so does your stream.

Tier 2: the bonded budget build (what bonding means)

Bonding means combining several mobile connections, for example two carriers plus Wi-Fi, into one stream. Each carries part of the video, so when one carrier hits a dead zone, the others keep you live.

  • A bonding app. Moblin (iPhone, free, all features included) sends SRTLA, the protocol bonded IRL streams use. IRL Pro (Android, free) lists SRTLA bonding and a free bonding service, though its Play Store listing was last updated in September 2024.
  • A second connection on another carrier. A spare phone or hotspot with its own SIM, joined over Wi-Fi. Check the hotspot allowance: T-Mobile lists 60 GB of high speed hotspot data on Experience More 2.0 and 250 GB on Experience Beyond 2.0.
  • A relay. A server that rebuilds the bonded pieces into one stream and forwards it to the platform: IRL Pro's free service, BELABOX cloud (from $10 a month, a perk for its GitHub supporters) or a cloud OBS.

Why OBS in the cloud keeps you live. When your phone streams straight to Twitch and the signal dies, your stream drops off the platform. With OBS on a server, the server is what is live: when your feed drops, it shows a "be right back" (BRB) scene until you reconnect. IRLToolkit sells this from $129 a month (1080p60, 7,500 kbps output): see IRLToolkit.

DIY with a camera. BELABOX is free software that turns a small board (Orange Pi 5 Plus, Radxa Rock 5 or Jetson Nano) into a bonded H.265 encoder for several modems. You build it yourself: BELABOX.

Tier 3: the professional bonded backpack (LiveU, TVU)

The pro tier swaps the phone for a dedicated bonded encoder and a real camera:

  • LiveU Solo PRO. A 4K encoder that bonds up to six connections (four external 4G/5G modems, Wi-Fi and LAN) at up to 20 Mbps, per LiveU. It sells through resellers: B&H listed the HDMI version at $1,795, or $2,245 with the two modem Connect kit. Data plans are bought in LiveU's Solo Portal.
  • TVU One. Six built-in 5G modems, up to 12 bonded connections including Starlink, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, per TVU, whose IRL page adds hot swap batteries and an IRLToolkit integration. Sold and rented by quote, so price on request through tvunetworks.com. B&H does not carry it.
  • A camera with HDMI out, such as the Sony ZV-1 II ($999.99 on Sony's store): 1080p60 over micro HDMI, runs on USB power.

LiveU build, arithmetic: $2,245 + $999.99 + $59.99 (power bank) = $3,304.98, plus data. People search for a "$30,000 backpack": no published price we found comes close. The dearest listing in our check was B&H's $3,045 LiveU SDI kit; TVU quotes privately. Packing and cooling it all: IRL streaming backpack.

How to start IRL streaming: Twitch, Kick, a camera, OBS

  1. Pick your tier. Start with tier 1 unless you know you stream through dead zones.
  2. Set quality for walking. Kick's Go Live help recommends 720p for IRL with movement, says 30 fps suits IRL, and keeps the bitrate under half your upload speed.
  3. Mic on, power bank in your pocket, Do Not Disturb on, then test on the route you plan to walk.

On Twitch or Kick: use the Twitch app (tap +, then Stream) or KICK Go Live, which works with any Kick account. For bonding, point your app at the relay and the relay at the platform.

With a camera: a GoPro streams on its own: Kick's help shows the GoPro Quik steps (Live, Custom RTMP, paste your Stream URL and key). Other cameras need an encoder such as BELABOX, LiveU or TVU.

With OBS: OBS does not walk with you. For IRL it runs in the cloud or on a home PC that receives your SRT feed and adds overlays.

How much data does IRL streaming use? And Starlink Mini

GB per hour = Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. Arithmetic, video only, per hour:

  • 2.5 Mbps (Kick's low end for 720p30): about 1.1 GB
  • 4.5 Mbps (Twitch's 720p60 guideline): about 2.0 GB
  • 6 Mbps (Twitch's 1080p60 guideline): 2.7 GB
  • 8 Mbps (Kick's maximum): 3.6 GB

Audio (about 0.07 GB at 160 kbps) and bonding add a little. A 60 GB hotspot allowance lasts about 29 hours at 4.5 Mbps (60 ÷ 2.025).

IRL streaming with Starlink. What starlink.com states, checked 22 October 2026: Starlink Mini is a compact kit with a built-in router that fits in a backpack. Its spec sheet lists 1.10 kg, 25 to 40 W average draw, and power from 12 to 48 V or from USB-C at 100 W (20 V, 5 A) or more with Starlink's cable accessory. Roam plans: 100 GB for $55 a month, 300 GB for $80, Unlimited for $175. Past the 100 or 300 GB, speed drops and Starlink says video streaming is limited. At 6 Mbps, 100 GB is about 37 hours (100 ÷ 2.7).

In motion use is supported on Roam plans up to 100 mph (160 km/h) in authorized areas, Mini included, but is prohibited on land in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Jordan and Mexico. Starlink's US page lists the Mini Kit starting at $149. A 100 Wh battery runs Mini about 2.5 to 4 hours (100 ÷ 40, 100 ÷ 25) before losses: arithmetic.

IRL streaming mic, power and the rules

Mic. Outdoors, a clip-on wireless mic near your mouth beats the phone mic, and Kick suggests a foam windscreen against wind. Test that your app hears it: KICK Go Live's help says AirPods work and other external mics have limited support for now.

Power. Kick warns that charging while streaming adds heat and hot phones slow down: dim the screen, avoid direct sun. In a backpack, add up the watts first.

Twitch rules. Twitch's Community Guidelines forbid activity that may endanger your life or cause physical harm, stunts included. Dangerous or distracted driving is "never acceptable": setting up the camera while parked is fine, reading chat or handling the device while driving is not. Streaming from a private space without permission is also prohibited.

Kick rules. Kick's Community Guidelines (updated 19 March 2026) leave high risk stunts to professionals, require creators in public or sensitive areas to follow local laws and not harass unwilling people, and do not permit dangerous driving.

Filming people in streets, shops or venues: follow local law and venue rules. This is not legal advice.

Where ReelShift fits in an IRL setup

ReelShift needs nothing in your backpack: it watches your public stream on Twitch, Kick, YouTube or TikTok LIVE and follows what you say (stories, jokes, hot takes, big reactions) and the loud moments, so it works on IRL streams with no game on screen. Vertical clips with word synced captions land in your library within minutes, while you are still live. Hands busy? Say "clip that" and it saves the last 60 seconds. Creator is $24.99 a month for 1 channel, with a 7 day free trial (1 channel, 5 streaming hours, card required, nothing charged today). See ReelShift for IRL streamers.
