How AI clipping
actually works.

An AI clipper looks and listens for signs that something happened, then cuts, captions and reframes that moment. Here is what it looks for, the two kinds of tools, and where AI still gets it wrong.

Short answer: an AI clipper scans a video for signals that a moment matters: sudden loud audio, laughter or shouting, a burst of chat messages, what is being said, and in games, events like a kill feed or a win screen. It scores those moments, cuts the best ones, turns them vertical by following your face or the action, and adds captions made with speech recognition. Some tools do this after the stream, from the VOD. Others watch the live stream and clip as it happens.

Two kinds: after the stream or during it

After the stream (VOD or upload). You connect your channel, paste a link or upload a file, and the tool works through the finished video. Eklipse says its detection runs across the full VOD once your account is linked. StreamLadder says its ClipGPT analyzes your entire VOD. Opus Clip, Vizard and Crayo work from uploads and links. The upside: the AI sees the whole video before it picks. The downside: nothing happens until the stream is over and the video is ready.

During the stream (live). The tool watches the stream while it is still live and cuts each moment a few seconds after it happens. ReelShift works this way. The upside: you can post while people are still talking about the moment. The downside: the AI has to judge a moment without knowing what comes next.

The signals AI looks for

  • Speech. Speech recognition turns everything said into text with timestamps. The AI can then look for punchlines, stories and strong lines. Crayo, for example, says its AI scans for hooks like stories and punchlines.
  • Audio loudness and emotion. Shouting, laughing and sudden jumps in volume. Eklipse lists laughter, shouting and sudden volume changes among the things it scores.
  • Chat activity. When chat suddenly speeds up, something probably happened. Eklipse mentions chat spikes and StreamLadder mentions chat interactions.
  • Game events. Some tools read the screen itself. Eklipse says it reads kills, wins and round results from on-screen graphics and kill feeds, so a quiet play can still count.
  • Your own cue. A voice command like "clip that" tells the tool a moment matters. Eklipse, StreamLadder and ReelShift all offer one.
  • Faces and movement. These are mostly used for framing the clip, not for picking it.

Captions and reframing

Captions come from the same speech recognition. Each word gets a time, so captions can pop up word by word in sync with the voice. It works well for clear speech and struggles with names, slang, game terms and people talking over each other. Opus Clip says its captions are over 97% accurate. Even at that rate, a clip with 150 words can have a few wrong ones, so read them before you post.

Reframing turns a wide 16:9 stream into a tall 9:16 clip. The AI finds what matters in the frame, usually a face cam or the action, and keeps it in view. How clips get scored

Every possible moment gets a score from the signals above. When several signals fire together, like a big play, a shout and a chat spike at once, the score goes up. Eklipse says clips rank higher when reactions and gameplay spike together. Treat any score as a guess about what is interesting, not a promise of views. The best check is still you watching the clip.

What AI still gets wrong

  • Context. Inside jokes, a slow story that pays off ten minutes later, a callback to last week. AI does not know your community.
  • Loud is not always good. A sneeze, a doorbell or a sponsor read can spike the audio.
  • Quiet great moments. A calm clutch with no reaction and no chat spike is hard for any tool that listens rather than reads the game.
  • Cut points. A clip can start a few seconds late or keep going after the payoff.
  • Captions. Names and game words are the usual mistakes.
  • Rules. AI cannot tell whether you have permission to post a clip. Only post someone else's stream with their permission.
