Clip a stream as a viewer

Per YouTube's help center, you need to be signed in, and the channel must be eligible and allow clips.

On a computer:

1. Open the live stream or video.
2. Select More, then Clip.
3. Add a title (up to 140 characters).
4. Drag the slider to choose the part you want, between 5 and 60 seconds.
5. Select Share clip and copy the link, embed it, or send it to a social network.

In the YouTube app (Android, iPhone, iPad):

1. Open the stream.
2. Below the Subscribe button, slide the buttons to the right and tap Clip.
3. Drag the slider to pick 5 to 60 seconds, add a title, then tap Share clip.

Why live clips need DVR

YouTube's help center says you can't create clips from live streams without DVR, the feature that lets viewers pause and rewind a stream. DVR has a window too. If a stream runs longer than that window, clips from outside it won't play until the stream ends and the recording is posted.

If the Clip button is missing, the likely reasons are: DVR is off, the creator turned clipping off, or you are not signed in.

Where clips show up

• Your clips: every clip you make is saved in your library, under Your clips in the left menu. Delete one there with the menu, then Delete clip.
• Public: clips can be watched by anyone who can also watch the original video. They play on a loop from the original's watch page.
• They can disappear: if the original is deleted, set to private, or breaks YouTube's Community Guidelines, the clip goes too. Clips of unlisted videos stay up.

If it's your stream

Turn on DVR so viewers can clip you live. In YouTube Studio: Create, Go live, open Stream settings, then under Additional settings switch on Enable DVR. You can change it during the stream. YouTube notes rewind may be limited on streams longer than 12 hours.

Control who clips. Clipping is on by default. To stop it, untick Allow viewers to clip my content in YouTube Studio's advanced settings.

Make Shorts after the stream. Once the recording is up, YouTube gives you two routes:

• YouTube Studio: Content, Videos, pick the stream, then Clips and Shorts and Create clip or Short. You can pick the part from the transcript or the timeline. YouTube says you won't be penalized for reusing your own content this way.
• Edit into a Short: on the video's watch page in the app, tap Remix, then Edit into a Short, and choose up to 60 seconds. This only works on public videos and not on ones with third party copyright claims.
