How to turn a podcast
into clips.

A one-hour episode can feed your short-form pages for a week, if you pick the right minutes. Here is how to find them, frame them and cut them for TikTok, Shorts and Reels.

Short answer: find moments that make sense on their own: a strong opinion, a story with a payoff, a big laugh or a real disagreement. Cut each one to a single idea, usually 30 to 90 seconds. Frame the person talking in a vertical 9:16 crop, or stack two speakers top and bottom, and burn in captions. Open with the best line, not the question that led to it.

Finding the moments

Podcast moments are about what is said, so look for these:

  • Strong takes. A sentence people will agree or argue with.
  • Stories with an ending. A setup, a turn and a punchline.
  • Laughter and raised voices. Look for the tall peaks in the audio waveform.
  • "Wait, what?" moments where a host or guest is genuinely surprised.
  • Useful answers. A clear tip or explanation that stands alone.

A transcript speeds this up: skim it for lines that would work as a hook and jump straight to them. During recording, jot down the time when something lands. More in how to find the best moments in a stream.

Framing two or more people

Most podcasts are shot wide with everyone in frame. A vertical clip has room for about one face at a time, so pick a layout:

  • Follow the speaker. Crop to whoever is talking and switch when the other person answers. Best for monologues and stories.
  • Stack them. One person on top, one below. Best for fast back and forth, where the reaction matters as much as the line.
  • Wide for the laugh. Cut to a wider shot when everyone reacts at once.

Keep faces and captions away from the bottom and right edges, where the app buttons sit.

Captions do most of the work

A podcast clip with no captions is just two people talking with the sound off. Burn in word-synced captions, big enough to read on a phone. Check guest names, brands and jargon, because speech tools miss those most. Put a one-line hook on screen for the first seconds that says what the moment is about. See how to add captions to clips.

How long should podcast clips be?

Podcast moments usually need more setup than a gaming fail, so they run longer. The platform rules:

  • YouTube Shorts: square or vertical, up to 3 minutes.
  • Instagram Reels: up to 20 minutes, but only reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to new audiences.
  • TikTok: Creator Rewards only counts videos of at least 1 minute. Podcast clips often reach that naturally.

A good rule: start as late as you can and end right after the payoff. More in the best clip length for TikTok, Shorts and Reels. If the show has guests, make sure they are fine with clips being posted, and only clip other people's shows with permission.

Where ReelShift fits

If you stream your podcast live on Twitch, Kick, YouTube or TikTok, ReelShift clips it in real time: it catches the moments from audio spikes, emotion and chat speed, reframes to 9:16 and burns in word-synced captions. On Creator Plus you can also upload a recording or paste a video URL to clip an episode after the fact. See ReelShift for live podcasts.

FAQ

Quick answers.

How many clips can I get from one podcast episode?

It depends on the episode. An hour often has several moments that stand alone, but only post the ones that make sense without the rest of the conversation.

How do I make a podcast clip vertical with two people?

Either crop to whoever is speaking and switch as the conversation moves, or stack both people top and bottom so you see the reaction too.

How long should podcast clips be?

Usually 30 to 90 seconds. Keep them to 3 minutes or less so they fit YouTube Shorts and Instagram's recommendation limit.

Can ReelShift clip a podcast that isn't live?

Yes, on Creator Plus: upload the recording or paste a video URL. Live podcasts on Twitch, Kick, YouTube or TikTok LIVE are clipped while they're still live on every plan.
