League has a clip recorder built into its replays, and plenty of players never find it. Replays, Highlights, the clips folder, recorder apps, your stream and Riot's video rules, checked 26 October 2026.

Short answer: after a game, click the download button on the End of Game screen or in your Match History, then Watch Replay. Go to your play and press Ctrl + V (or click record) to start and stop. Riot calls these clips Highlights: .webm videos, 720p unless you raise the quality, saved in Documents\LeagueofLegends\Highlights as Riot writes it. Replays expire at the next patch (26.22 is scheduled for 4 November 2026). To clip while you play, use a recorder such as Medal (hotkey usually F8, auto clips for League) or Outplayed. Streaming? Use Twitch's clip button.
| When it records | Where the clip goes | Cost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riot Highlights (in the client) | After the game, from a downloaded replay: Ctrl + V or the record button | .webm files in Documents\LeagueofLegends\Highlights, plus the Highlights section of your Profile | Free, part of League |
| Medal | While you play: a hotkey (usually F8) or auto clipping on League events | Your Medal library, with a share link for each clip | Free, optional premium features |
| Outplayed (Overwolf) | While you play: automatic, or on demand | A match timeline in the app | Free with ads, subscription available |
| Game Bar, NVIDIA, AMD | While you play: a key saves the last stretch of play | Video files on your PC | Free with Windows or your graphics card |
| Twitch clip button | While you stream, or later from the past broadcast: up to 60 seconds | Your Twitch clips, with a portrait version made for you | Free |
From Riot's Replays FAQ on support.riotgames.com, medal.tv, outplayed.tv and Overwolf's app page, and Twitch's help center, checked 26 October 2026.
League's own clip tool lives in Replay mode. Per Riot's Replays FAQ, checked 26 October 2026:
The limits. The client keeps your last 20 games. You can download other players' replays too, but since patch 26.21 everyone gets 10 replay downloads an hour. Riot's patch notes (20 October 2026) say the cap stops apps that scrape thousands of replays. Replays show gameplay only, no in game chat.
League replay expired? Replays last one patch. Riot's example: a game played on 7.1 can be watched until 7.2 drops. Patch 26.21 went live on 21 October 2026 and Riot's schedule puts 26.22 on 4 November 2026, so record your Highlights before then. Riot gives no expiry for Highlights themselves: they are video files on your PC.
Highlights are .webm videos. Riot gives the folder as C:\
In the client, the Highlights section of your Profile lets you view, rename and delete Highlights, and drag them straight into a social site to share.
Replays are .rofl files that the League client opens with Watch Replay. To post a play, record it as a Highlight. Riot's FAQ does not print the default replay folder. You choose both folders in the client's settings, under Replays. That is also where to look on a Mac: Riot only prints the Windows path.
Playing a .webm: Riot says it plays when you drag it into Chrome or Firefox, and that VLC works well.
Highlights only exist after the game, from a replay. To save a play the moment it happens, a recorder has to run while you play. Checked on each maker's site, 26 October 2026:
Auto clip and AI clip. For League, "auto" means event detection: the app notices a game event and saves it. That catches a pentakill, not the funny thing you said in lane. Which kind of tool catches what: game recorders vs stream clippers.
Highlights and recorders save the game. Your stream is more: your cam, your voice, alerts and overlay. If you stream League, clip the broadcast itself. Per Twitch's help center:
A Highlight is a wide game video with no cam. Our free Twitch clip to vertical tool takes any MP4, MOV or WebM up to 10 minutes, so a .webm Highlight goes straight in. It runs in your browser, uploads nothing, adds no watermark and saves a 1080 × 1920 video. Three layouts:
Mind the pixels. A 9:16 slice of a 1280 × 720 Highlight is about 405 × 720 pixels (720 × 9 ÷ 16), stretched to fill a phone. Raise the Highlight quality before you record, or use Fit. The tool does not add captions.
Where League clips live. Twitch's League of Legends category has a Clips tab you can filter by period and language. Medal has a League page where players browse top plays and upload their own.
Starting a clip channel. Riot's fan content policy, "Legal Jibber Jabber" (last updated August 2018), lets you make free projects with League footage, though Riot can deny anyone the use of its IP at any time. In short:
Clipping another streamer's League stream also needs their permission and the platform's rules: see how to avoid copyright strikes on clips. Paid campaigns: on our Clip Rewards list on 26 October 2026, none of the 98 pay per view campaigns was for League of Legends. A per view payment from a brand is not one of Riot's three exceptions: our reading, not legal advice.
ReelShift does not open replays or run on your PC. If you stream League on Twitch, Kick, YouTube or TikTok LIVE, it watches your public stream and follows what you say, the loud moments and, on game streams, the kills and wins read off the screen. Vertical 9:16 clips with word synced captions and an on screen title written from what was said, in your stream's language, land in your library within minutes while you are still live. Say "clip that" and it saves the last 60 seconds. Creator is $24.99 a month for 1 channel, Creator Plus $59.99 and Agency $199.99 for 10 channels, with a 7 day free trial (1 channel, 5 streaming hours, card required, nothing charged today). See pricing.
Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial: 1 channel and 5 streaming hours to try it on a real stream. Nothing is charged today, and we email you the day before it ends.
Download the replay from the End of Game screen or your Match History, click Watch Replay, then press Ctrl + V or click record to start and stop. Riot calls the result a Highlight.
Riot gives C:\Users\(your user name)\Documents\LeagueofLegends\Highlights, as .webm files. The exact path shows when a Highlight is saved, and you can change the folder in the client's settings, under Replays.
Replays expire when the next patch arrives, and the client lists only your last 20 games. Patch 26.22 is scheduled for 4 November 2026.
Not with Riot's Highlights, which record from replays. Use a recorder: Medal (hotkey usually F8), Outplayed, Xbox Game Bar or your graphics card's Instant Replay.
Yes. Medal lists League among its auto clipping games, and Outplayed captures best moments automatically. Both react to game events, not to what you say.
Riot's Legal Jibber Jabber lets individual players earn passive ad revenue and streamers take subs and donations. Paywalls, crowdfunding and company run projects need a written license from Riot.
