How to clip
on Twitch.

As a viewer: the clip button

Per Twitch's help center, any logged-in viewer can clip a channel unless the streamer turned clips off, limited them to followers or subscribers, or blocked that viewer.

1. Click the clip icon on the video player. The Clip Creator opens as an overlay you can drag around the page, so the stream keeps playing. It mutes the stream audio so you hear the clip; unmute it if you want both.
2. Set the length with the slider under the video, up to 60 seconds.
3. Check the crop. Twitch suggests a portrait crop that keeps the cam and the gameplay in frame. Accept it, adjust it or dismiss it.
4. Add a title and click Publish. A clip only exists once it has a title and is published. Leave the page first and it is lost.

On PC: is there a shortcut?

On a computer you clip in the browser on twitch.tv, with the steps above. Twitch's help center does not list a keyboard shortcut for clipping. Plenty of sites repeat Alt+X, but Twitch does not document it, so the clip icon is the reliable way. To see the keys the player supports for your account, press ? on the player, or open the player's settings gear and choose View Keyboard Shortcuts.

On your phone: the Twitch app

In the iPhone or Android app, tap the video so the controls show, then tap the clip icon at the top of the stream. You can trim and title on mobile, but Twitch says portrait layout editing is not on mobile yet, so fix the crop later on a computer. The app can also share clips to Stories: clips of your own channel, or clips you made that the streamer featured. The full phone walkthrough is in how to clip on Twitch mobile.

Watching on Xbox: clip from another screen

Twitch's help center does not document a clip button in the Twitch app on Xbox or other TV apps. What works instead:

• Open the same stream on your phone or PC, signed in, and clip it there. Do it soon after the moment, because the clip comes from what just played.
• Or clip it later from the past broadcast, if the streamer saves VODs. See the VOD section below.
• Streaming your own Xbox games? Saving your gameplay is a console feature (Xbox button, then X), not a Twitch clip.

As a streamer, while you are live

You can clip your own stream like any viewer, but your hands are busy. The documented ways to do it without leaving the game:

• Clip That Quick Action. Add it to the Quick Actions panel in Stream Manager and click it when something happens. Twitch says these clips include captions by default.
• Your channel in a second tab. Click the clip icon, trim and publish.
• A Stream Deck key or a chat bot, both covered below.
• Your voice. Twitch's help center describes saying "Twitch, Clip That" during a broadcast. Its Auto Clips article lists that command as part of the Auto Clips alpha, which is invite only and limited to English-language channels with VODs and clips on. See how to turn on Twitch Auto Clips.
• A marker for later. Type /marker with a short note in chat (a broadcaster and editor command) to drop a stream marker at that timestamp, then cut the moment in the Highlighter after the stream.

With a Stream Deck

Elgato's official Twitch plugin has a Create Clip action. Per Elgato's help center:

1. Install the Twitch plugin from the Stream Deck Marketplace. Elgato says it is free.
2. In the Stream Deck app, open Preferences, go to the Account tab, click + at the bottom left and choose Twitch. Log in to Twitch in the browser window that opens.
3. Drag Create Clip onto a key and pick your account.
4. Press it while you are live. Elgato says the action only works during a live stream.

Elgato says the key makes a 30 second clip from the previous 90 seconds of your stream, which you can edit later to up to 60 seconds. Two other actions help: Open Last Clip opens your channel's newest clip in your browser, and Create Stream Marker marks the moment to cut after the stream.

The !clip chat command

Twitch's own chat /commands include no clip command, and Twitch notes that !commands come from bots. So !clip needs a bot. Fossabot, for example, lists !clip among its default commands: "Creates a clip of the current stream on Twitch."

Bots clip through Twitch's Create Clip API, and Twitch's developer docs explain what comes out:

• The API captures up to 90 seconds around the moment of the command: about 85 seconds before it and about 5 seconds after.
• By default Twitch publishes up to the last 30 seconds of that window, with a default title.
• To keep a different 5 to 60 second part or change the title, open the clip's edit link. It works for up to 24 hours, or until the clip is published.
• It only works while the channel is live with clips enabled, and the follower and subscriber limits still apply.

Limit the command to mods or subscribers, or a busy chat fills your Clips Manager with duplicates.

As a mod

• Clip from Mod View. Click the sword icon at the bottom of chat in any channel you moderate, or go to twitch.tv/moderator. Twitch lists clipping the stream among Mod View's Quick Actions. Mod View is in the iPhone and Android apps too.
• Feature clips if the streamer allows it. Streamers and editors can feature clips by default, and the streamer can give moderators that power in Clips Settings under Featured Clips Permissions.
• Post clip links in busy chats. When a channel uses Block Hyperlinks, the channel owner, mods and VIPs are exempt.

Deleting clips in bulk (Delete All Clips From Video) and banning clip makers happen in the streamer's Clips Manager; Twitch does not describe a clip delete button for mods.

After the stream: clip a VOD

1. Open the past broadcast from the channel's Videos tab, or, for your own channel, from Creator Dashboard, Content, Video Producer.
2. Play to the moment, click the clip icon and finish it the same way: up to 60 seconds, a title, Publish.

• Skip the opening. Twitch warns that clipping inside the first 1:30 of a VOD can cause an error or odd behavior.
• No VOD, no clip. If Store Past Broadcasts is off, the stream is not saved and you cannot make clips or Highlights from it. The setting is only in the Creator Dashboard on the web, not in the mobile app.
• Watch the clock. Past broadcasts are kept 7 days for most streamers, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users.
• Need more than 60 seconds? Choose Highlight on the past broadcast in Video Producer to open the Highlighter. Highlights and uploads share a 100 hour storage limit.

Share a clip in chat and beyond

Every clip has its own URL. Click Share on the clip (on the channel page, in Clips Manager or right after you publish), copy the link and paste it into chat.

If your message never appears, the channel probably uses Block Hyperlinks. Twitch then holds messages with links for a moderator to review, and you see "Your message is being reviewed". The channel owner, mods and VIPs skip the queue, and a streamer can let specific URLs through by adding them to permitted terms.

Clip settings streamers control

Open Creator Dashboard, Settings, Stream and scroll to Clips Settings. Per Twitch's help center:

• Enable Clips on or off.
• Exclude Categories: nobody else can clip you while you stream in them.
• Followers-only: any follower, or followers of 10 or 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 3 months.
• Subscriber-only: only subs can clip; anyone can watch.
• Let viewers upload clips to their socials: off by default, all viewers or none.
• Captions for viewer clips and "Clip That" clips, plus Featured Clips Permissions and Comment Access.
